Depression
People who suffer from depression are very diligent people. They
have very high standards and/or expectations for themselves.
They try very hard to live up to their own expectations (and
perhaps what they think God expects of them).
Then when they fail to live "perfectly," they are hard on
themselves. They feel like a failure, and beat themselves up.
That was what I always used to do. When I would make a mistake, I
would say to myself: "You dummy!" Or when I would have an
encounter with another person that went badly, I would say to
myself: "What did I do wrong?"
BEATING YOURSELF UP IS THE PROBLEM!
I began to realize that if I treated other people the way I treated
myself, nobody would want anything to do with me. I wouldn't
think of treating them that way!
But as a Christian, aren't I supposed to try to live a good life? And
when I fail, aren't I guilty of sin? Shouldn't I be hard on myself then?
