Chapter 1
Hard Hearted
Unemotional
The Problem
These two issues are related. They are difficult to identify in
ourselves, but others will notice it, and they will be hurt by it.
Those who are close to us will feel left out or unimportant.
They may see us as aloof, or cold, or arrogant. Men are more
likely to be like this than are women.
Since you are on this web page, I presume that you have
been made aware of this problem, probably by someone else.
It may even seem like a mystery to you. After all, you feel
"normal."
This was my story, which is why I understand it. I was the
one who always kept my cool when others were falling apart.
I thought this was a merit badge, but my wife was dying on
the vine. Eventually the Lord showed me that my
non-emotional status was actually the diagnosis of a very
serious condition.
I now know that people are intensely emotional creatures.
We are meant to have relationships at a heart-to-heart level.
When we are unemotional, we are not fully human.
Our culture is no help, as it is stuck in rationalism - if
something comes up from inside us, it is untrustworthy and
should be ignored.
The good news is that Jesus set me free, and He can do the
same for you.
Take my word for it. If you are unemotional, you need to be
set free.
My book "I Will Give You Rest" addresses the whole array of
human struggles that Jesus can heal. The chapter order is
for the majority of needs.
However, your issue needs specific attention, and so I would
recommend that you read the book in a different order.
Recommended Sequence
I would recommend that you start with Chapter 9, which will
show you how your emotions got shut down.
Then go to Chapter 11, which will show you how very
important your emotions are, and why you need them to be
set free to be expressed.
Then read Chapter 12, which will help you to understand who
you really are inside. You are definitely capable of
soft-heartedness and compassion. That part of you just
needs to be set free to live.
Finally, go back to Chapter 2 and read the rest of the chapters
in order.
Your Journey
I would recommend that you write down somewhere this
revised sequence of chapters so that you will not forget it -
remember, 9, 11, 12, 2. Of course, you can always come
back here if you forget.
Be aware that when you read the chapters out of order, you
will bump into some terms with which you are not familiar,
because they were taught in earlier chapters which you have
not yet read.
However, this should not interfere with the main messages in
the chapters you are reading out of order.
You are free to spend as much time as you like on
this website, and you can jump in and out as your
schedule gives you time to read. When you come
back, you can just take up where you left off by
clicking on the appropriate chapter in the links on the
left of the web pages.
