Chapter 1
Addictions

The Problem
Addictions cover a lot of territory.  One definition of an
addiction is any substance or activity that seems to meet a
compulsive need in us.  This can include alcohol, drugs, sex,
food, work, gambling, need to perform, shopping, "stuff" (big
house, car, etc.).

They are very compelling, and virtually impossible to resist
on a consistent basis.

They fit the scenario that the Apostle Paul described:

For what I am doing, I do not understand.  For what I will
to do, that I do not practice; but what I hate, that I do.
    (Romans 7:5, NKJV).

This problem seems to be bigger than us.

Why is this so?

How come your faith doesn't seem adequate to give you the
victorious life Jesus promised?

Some Promises
After all, Jesus promised:

….where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is liberty (2
    Corinthians 3:1, all NKJV).

He has sent Me to heal the brokenhearted . . .
To proclaim liberty to the captives . . .
To set at liberty those who are oppressed . . . (Luke 4:
    18).

For My yoke is easy and My burden is light (Matthew 11:
    30).

I will give you rest (Matthew 11:28).

You probably know many more promises in the Bible.

What Is Wrong?
Somehow, the promises seem greater than the reality you are
experiencing.

Is this the way it should be?

How come your faith it isn't working?

These are reasonable questions.

In fact, they are the right questions.

There Is An Answer
All the above scriptures really are true.

Paul goes on to describe the answer to our predicament:
O wretched man that I am!  Who will deliver me from this
body of death?  I thank God - through Jesus Christ our
    Lord! (Romans 7:24-25).

However, you just need detailed instructions as to how to
appropriate Jesus' provision into your life, so you can be set
free.

The core issue in all addictions is
internal emotional pain.
The addictive substance or activity makes the individual feel
a little better while they are indulging.  However, this implies
that while they are not indulging in their addiction, they don't
feel very good.

The way to end the power of the addiction is to find out why
the person doesn't feel very good inside, so it can be cured.

My book "I Will Give You Rest" addresses the whole array of
human struggles that Jesus can heal.  The chapter order is
for the majority of needs.

However, your specific issue needs specific attention, and so
I would recommend that you read the book in a different
order than .

Recommended Sequence
I would recommend that you start with Chapter 9, which will
show you why you don't normally feel at peace.

Then go to Chapter
12, which describes what your
relationship with yourself can be like, and why.

Then go to Chapter
11, which will identify a powerful tool that
you possess that is indispensable in your healing journey.

Finally, go back to Chapter
2 and read the rest of the
chapters in order.

Your Journey
I would recommend that you write down somewhere this
revised sequence of chapters so that you will not forget it -
remember,
9.12,11.  Of course, you can always come back to
this page if you forget.

Be aware that when you read the chapters out of order, you
will bump into some terms with which you are not familiar,
because they were taught in earlier chapters which you have
not yet read.

However, this should not interfere with the main messages in
the chapters you are reading out of order.

You are free to spend as much time as you like on
this website, and you can jump in and out as your
schedule gives you time to read.  When you come
back, you can just take up where you left off by
clicking on the appropriate chapter in the links on the
left of the web pages.
