A Big Problem
Much of the world sees the present Christian church as ineffective,
uninteresting, and unappealing. They stay away in droves. Many
Christians actually feel the same way. They have a sense that it should
be more than what it is, but often have trouble putting their finger on
the problem.
There are groups of reformers trying to fix it. Two of those
movements are the “house church movement,” and what is referred to
as the “Emergent Church.” I have read quite a bit of what they teach,
and agree with much of it. But all of them miss the target.
The Solution
God’s major goal for each person is to change them into the image of
Jesus (as I have written in Chapter 6 of my book, “I Will Give You
Rest”). He has provided the way, but we need detailed instructions as
to HOW this can happen for every believer. Since this transformation
is God’s major goal, and the Christian church is meant to be His
primary tool on earth, it seems crystal clear that the major goal of the
Christian church should be to facilitate this process of transformation
into the image of Jesus.
The Reformers Will Fail
Nowhere are Christians taught how to accomplish their transformation -
at least almost nowhere. In this respect the church reformers and the
present Christian church which they criticize are identical. Therefore,
for all their efforts, the reformers’ results will provide little
improvement in the church. How could the Lord allow them to
succeed if they are ignoring what He wants them to do?
Your Solution
Although much of the present church will be of little help for you, you
need not fail in your process of being changed into the image of Jesus
(and experiencing His peace and rest). You and the Lord can proceed
on your journey together. Since this transformation is His primary goal
for you, He will lead you and anoint the process.
